Signs of a cooling job market are emerging in Louisiana

Job opportunities in Louisiana dropped by around 15,000 from July to August, according to the most recent numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

According to The Daily Advertiser, the BLS data issued on Wednesday provides one of the earliest peeks at how a prospective recession or economic slowdown would affect the state’s job market.

According to August’s numbers, both job vacancies and hiring fell significantly from the previous month.

As in previous months, the number of employee departures in Louisiana, both voluntary and involuntary, increased by 6,000 from July to August.

Since August of 2021, Louisiana has witnessed a more significant increase in its quit rate than all but 13 other states.

Approximately 22,000 people in Louisiana were either laid off or terminated in August, the second-highest monthly total this year behind May’s 27,000. There have been a more significant number of terminations and layoffs compared to the same period last year, although overall it is still quite low compared to historical norms.

When comparing the rate of involuntary separations in each of the 50 states during the past year, Louisiana had the sixth highest rate.
